Part 1
The Red Hair That Started It All: Inside the Paternity Test That Tore a Family Apart
The delivery room. A nurse holds a newborn. The mother, Maria, is exhausted but glowing. The father, Jose, is pacing. Then he sees the baby. Red hair. Light skin. His face goes dark. He doesn't coo. He doesn't cry. He screams. At the nurse. At Maria. At the universe. "Give her a DNA test!" he yells. "That's not my baby!" The baby, Jacqueline, wails. The nurse freezes. Maria's heart shatters. That was three years ago. The scream still echoes.
Cut to now. Maria sits on a daytime TV set. Jacqueline is 3. She's not in the studio. She's at home, probably watching cartoons. Maria's eyes are tired. She's been fighting this war for years. Jose? He's backstage, waiting to unleash. The host asks the first question. Maria answers. The audience leans in. This isn't just a paternity test. It's a public execution. And it all started with a hair color.
Four years ago, Maria and Jose were a couple. Then Jose cheated. Maria found out. She was angry. Rejected. So she retaliated. She slept with another man. Soon after, she discovered she was pregnant. That's the backstory. Messy. Human. The kind of thing that happens behind closed doors. But this story didn't stay behind closed doors. It exploded on national TV. And the fuse? A baby with red hair.
Maria's defense is simple: Jacqueline looks exactly like Jose. Same nose. Same mouth. Same facial expressions. "She looks exactly like him," Maria says. "Everything." She's absolutely positive he's the father. But she admits she cheated in the past. That admission is Jose's weapon. He uses it to paint her as a liar. A cheater. A woman who would pin another man's baby on him. Maria says she loves Jose. She wants to save the relationship. But she's tired. "I can only take so much," she says. "Once I prove I've been telling the truth, Jose better stop acting like a damn fool."
Jose's on-air statement is brutal. "Maria can't fool me," he says. "She's a conniving liar. She thinks she could pin some white man's baby on me. But I'm not falling for it. Jacqueline came out looking like the little mermaid. She had red hair and white skin. I am a Hispanic man. Does it look like I could make a ginger?" He also claims he caught Maria messaging another man around the time she got pregnant. "I've given Maria 5 years of my life and have been raising her daughter as my own," he says. "I deserve to know these results now." The audience applauds. Jose takes a seat. The tension is thick enough to cut with a knife.
The host tries to mediate. He points out that Jacqueline looks like Jose. Jose shuts it down. "No, man, 'cause she's got red hair. I'm dark. She's not. I got black hair. She's got black hair. That's not mine. Look at her. That's a white man's baby. Look at the red hair and white skin." The host asks, "Are you white?" Jose says, "I'm not white. Are you white? No. Come on, man. That's a white man's baby." Maria fires back: "You can't trust her? Apparently she can't trust you either." Jose: "Why the hell do you know he's not trust me? You shouldn't put that baby on me. Don't do that. Stop doing that, man. Stop."
Jose doubles down. "I'm right to deny 'cause look, does she look like me? No. She's white. The baby's white. I'm dark. She's dark. Does she look white? No. Do I look white? No. Do I have red hair? Does she have red hair? No. You come on, man. You don't know her, man." The host tries again: "Jose, you don't trust her because you think she even after she admitted to cheating, you think she's cheated after that." Jose: "I've seen texts her with flirting. I caught her on Facebook flirting with men. All these emojis, we can the kisses with the heart, all this. This is a whole new definition of cheating." The host: "Emojis?" Jose: "Yeah, emojis. You know, the heart, the little kisses, the little winks, all that." The host: "Has it gotten down to that? You cheated on me. I saw you give an emoji to a guy. Come on. What does that mean?"
The host turns to Maria. "You think the fact that she's 10 years younger than you is that a problem?" Jose: "Yeah, and she's beautiful and stuff. Come on, and she's younger." The host: "I'm glad you think that. All right. First we have the lie detector test. Now y'all going to see who she really is." The room goes silent. The polygraph examiner asks the questions. "During your relationship with Jose, did you sleep with any of his family members?" Maria says no. The lie detector determines she's telling the truth. "Other than what Jose knows about, did you sleep with another man any other times that you went missing?" Maria says no. The lie detector determines that was a lie. The audience gasps. Applause. "Other than what Jose knows about, have you slept with any of the men you were talking to on Facebook?" Maria says no. Lie. Applause. "Have you slept with any of the men you admitted to cheating on Jose with more than the times he knows about?" Maria says no. Lie. Applause. Maria's face crumbles. Jose's face hardens. The host says, "I'm more interested in Jacqueline, okay?"
