Lucy was only four years old.

She was standing outside the family courtroom with tears in her eyes, holding the sleeve of her sweater so tightly that her little fingers had turned pale.

She didn't understand the legal papers.

She didn't understand why so many adults were whispering.

She only understood one thing.

Everyone kept telling her what she was supposed to say.

Her stepmother, Claire, crouched in front of her.

"Remember what we practiced."

Lucy nodded slowly.

"And remember," Claire continued, "if the judge asks you who you want to stay with, you choose Dad."

Lucy looked down.

"But I want Sarah."

Claire's expression changed.

"That's not the answer you're giving today."

Lucy became quiet.

Behind Claire stood Adam.

Her father.

He had barely spoken to her that morning.

He simply kept checking the courtroom doors and the documents in his hand.

Across the hallway, Sarah sat alone.

She had been Lucy's aunt and primary caregiver for years.

She was the person who knew which bedtime story Lucy liked.

The person who knew she hated thunderstorms.

The person who knew that when Lucy became frightened, she would rub the edge of her sleeve between her fingers.

Sarah noticed Lucy doing exactly that.

She immediately knew something was wrong.

She stood.

"Lucy?"

The little girl looked toward her.

For one brief second, her expression changed.

She wanted to run to Sarah.

But Claire gently turned her around.

"Come on."

The courtroom doors opened.

Everyone entered.

Judge Harrison took his seat.

The attorneys arranged their documents.

The room settled into silence.

Lucy stood beside her father.

Sarah watched from across the courtroom.

The judge looked at the little girl.

"Lucy, do you understand why you're here today?"

Lucy nodded.

"Can you tell me who you want to live with?"

Lucy looked at Adam.

Then at Claire.

Then at Sarah.

Her lips trembled.

"I choose Dad."

Sarah's face fell.

Adam lowered his eyes as though relieved.

Claire smiled faintly.

The attorney beside Adam began organizing the final documents.

One of them concerned the estate left by Lucy's grandfather.

Another concerned guardianship.

If the judge approved the arrangement, control of the inheritance would pass to Adam until Lucy became an adult.

Sarah had challenged the arrangement for months.

She believed the estate should remain protected for Lucy.

But now Lucy had given the answer everyone expected.

Judge Harrison looked down at the documents.

"Very well."

He reached for the gavel.

Sarah lowered her head.

Claire glanced at Adam.

For the first time that morning, both of them appeared confident.

The gavel rose.

Lucy stared at it.

Something inside her suddenly changed.

She remembered the night before.

She remembered the locked study.

The papers on the desk.

The photograph she had found inside a drawer.

And the conversation she had overheard.

A conversation she hadn't understood at the time.

Until that moment.

Lucy suddenly stepped forward.

"Wait!"

The judge stopped.

The entire courtroom went silent.

Lucy looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I changed my answer."

Claire stood immediately.

"Lucy, don't."

Judge Harrison raised one hand.

"Let her speak."

Lucy looked toward Sarah.

Then back toward the judge.

"I don't want Dad."

Adam froze.

Claire's face became pale.

Judge Harrison leaned forward.

"Why not?"

Lucy rubbed her sleeve.

"Because they told me to say it."

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

Sarah stood.

"Lucy..."

The judge looked at her.

"Please remain seated."

Then he turned back to Lucy.

"Who told you?"

Lucy pointed toward Claire.

"She did."

Claire shook her head.

"Your Honor, she's confused."

Lucy shook her head too.

"No."

Her voice was small.

But this time it was steady.

"I heard them talking."

Adam suddenly stood.

"That's enough."

Judge Harrison looked at him.

"Mr. Reed, sit down."

Adam obeyed.

Lucy continued.

"They said if I chose Dad, everything would be finished."

Sarah's attorney slowly closed his folder.

"What did they mean by everything?"

Lucy didn't know.

She looked at the judge.

"I don't know."

Then she remembered something else.

"They said Grandma's papers were in the blue room."

Adam's expression changed.

Sarah noticed.

So did the judge.

"Mr. Reed?"

Adam remained silent.

Judge Harrison looked at Claire.

"Ms. Reed?"

Claire shook her head.

"There is no blue room."

Lucy immediately looked toward her.

"There is."

Everyone turned toward the child.

Lucy continued.

"It's behind the big bookshelf."

Adam's face went completely still.

Sarah stared at him.

"Adam?"

He didn't answer.

The judge placed the gavel on the desk.

"No decision will be entered today."

Claire stood.

"But Your Honor—"

"No."

His voice was calm.

"The court is going to determine what this child has been exposed to before proceeding."

An officer near the courtroom door stepped forward.

Judge Harrison gave him an instruction.

"Contact the appropriate child welfare authorities. Also request an immediate review of the estate records."

Claire's expression changed.

Adam looked at her.

For the first time, they weren't communicating with confidence.

They were communicating with fear.

Sarah approached Lucy slowly.

She didn't touch her.

She simply crouched several feet away.

"You're safe."

Lucy stared at her.

"Can I tell you something?"

"Yes."

"I found Grandpa's notebook."

Sarah's eyes widened.

"Where?"

"In the blue room."

Adam suddenly spoke.

"Lucy doesn't know what she's talking about."

Lucy looked at him.

"I do."

Then she pointed toward his briefcase.

"It's in there."
