Part 3
Claire had been afraid of what the recording would reveal.
Not because Elena had endangered Noah.
But because the camera had captured something Claire desperately wanted to keep hidden.
Daniel turned toward the officer.
“Can we check the storage cabinet?”
The officer nodded.
They walked toward the garage.
Cabinet fourteen was locked.
Claire stood several feet away.
Daniel opened it.
Inside were old folders.
Photographs.
Bank statements.
And one sealed envelope.
Daniel picked it up.
His name was written on the front.
He opened it.
Inside was a single note.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, someone finally discovered what happened in the backyard.
Do not trust the person who told you Elena was responsible.
Daniel slowly looked toward Claire.
Then toward Elena.
The entire afternoon suddenly made sense.
Elena hadn't been the danger.
She had been the witness.
And the security camera had captured far more than anyone expected.
But there was one question nobody could answer.
Who had been entering the backyard?
And why had they been searching through Claire's father's records?
Daniel turned the note over.
There was one final sentence on the back.
The person you are looking for already knows you found the camera.
At that exact moment, the backyard security monitor went black.
Then the lights inside the house flickered.
Elena looked toward the window.
The side gate was open again.
And on the stone path outside sat another envelope.
This time, it had only three words written across the front.
FOR ELENA ONLY.
Elena stared at it.
She had no idea who had left it there.
But as she slowly walked toward the door, she realized something that made her stop.
The mystery had never started with Noah.
It had started long before she ever became the family's nanny.
And someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure Elena would be the person everyone blamed when the truth finally surfaced.
