Part 2
She stopped.
She looked directly at it.
Then she walked back inside.
The room became silent.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“What were you doing?”
Claire folded her arms.
“I was looking for my phone.”
“You didn't say that.”
“I forgot.”
The officer rewound the footage.
This time they watched carefully.
Claire hadn't been looking for a phone.
She had been looking for something beside the pool.
A small object.
Daniel frowned.
“What is that?”
The officer zoomed in.
It was a key.
Claire had picked it up.
Elena recognized it.
“That key belongs to the storage cabinet.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What storage cabinet?”
“The one near the garage.”
Claire suddenly spoke.
“It's nothing.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Then why were you looking for it?”
Claire didn't answer.
The officer asked,
“Do you want to explain?”
Claire looked at Daniel.
Then at Elena.
Finally, she said quietly,
“I was trying to protect this family.”
Daniel shook his head.
“From what?”
Claire looked toward the security monitor.
“From something I found last week.”
Everyone waited.
Claire continued.
“There were documents in the cabinet.”
“What documents?”
“Financial records.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Whose?”
“My father's.”
Daniel frowned.
“Your father?”
Claire nodded.
“He had an account I never knew about.”
Elena looked confused.
“What does that have to do with Noah?”
Claire didn't answer immediately.
Then she said,
“Nothing.”
The officer looked at the screen.
“Then why were you near the stroller?”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“I heard someone outside.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Claire, what aren't you telling me?”
She looked at him.
“I thought someone had entered the backyard.”
Everyone became silent.
The officer checked the recording again.
The shadow appeared.
This time, they watched frame by frame.
The figure moved near the side gate.
Then disappeared behind the garden wall.
Daniel looked toward the gate.
“Was it locked?”
“Yes,” Claire whispered.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
The officer walked outside.
The gate was still locked.
But something had been left beside it.
A small envelope.
The officer brought it inside.
There was no name on it.
Only one sentence.
YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.
Daniel stared at the envelope.
Claire immediately recognized the handwriting.
“What?”
She didn't answer.
Elena noticed.
“You know who wrote that.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Claire.”
She finally whispered,
“My father.”
Everyone stared at her.
“But your father died years ago,” Daniel said.
“I know.”
The officer opened the envelope.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed Claire as a child standing beside her father.
Behind them was the same house.
But there was something strange about the photograph.
A man stood near the backyard gate.
His face was partially hidden.
Daniel looked closer.
“Who is that?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Elena stared at the image.
Then she noticed something.
The man was wearing a watch.
A distinctive silver watch.
She had seen it before.
That morning.
On someone standing near the front gate.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned.
Elena pointed toward the photograph.
“I saw that watch today.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Where?”
“Outside the house.”
The officer immediately stepped toward the door.
But no one was there.
Daniel looked at the backyard again.
The pool was completely still.
The stroller remained beside the patio.
And the camera continued recording.
Then the monitor suddenly displayed a new notification.
MOTION DETECTED.
Everyone turned.
The backyard camera showed the side gate.
The gate slowly moved.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Who is there?”
No answer.
The image flickered.
Then returned.
The gate was open.
But no one was visible.
The officer went outside.
Elena remained beside Daniel.
Claire stood completely still.
Then the officer returned holding another object.
A small black flash drive.
He placed it on the table.
“It was hidden beneath the camera.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What is on it?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.”
The officer connected it to the computer.
One folder appeared.
It contained dozens of files.
The first file was dated six months earlier.
The second was dated four months earlier.
The third was dated three weeks earlier.
Daniel opened the latest one.
The screen showed the backyard.
But the recording wasn't from that afternoon.
It showed someone standing near Noah's stroller.
The person's face was never visible.
They placed an envelope beside the stroller.
Then walked away.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“When was this?”
The timestamp showed three days earlier.
Claire covered her mouth.
“I never saw that.”
Elena looked at the recording.
Neither had she.
The officer opened another file.
This one showed the side gate.
The same person appeared again.
Then another recording.
The same figure.
Again.
And again.
Someone had been entering the property repeatedly.
But the person never approached Noah.
Instead, they seemed to be searching for something.
Daniel suddenly looked at Claire.
“The documents.”
Claire nodded.
“They were looking for my father's records.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
The officer opened the final file.
A single photograph appeared.
It showed a storage cabinet.
On the cabinet was a handwritten number.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What's in cabinet fourteen?”
Claire's face went pale.
“I don't know.”
Elena quietly said,
“You do.”
Claire looked at her.
Elena continued.
“You weren't afraid of me.”
“You were afraid of the camera.”
Claire didn't answer.
Daniel slowly understood.
The accusation against Elena had never really been about the nanny.
