Elena thought she was saving a baby's life.

Within seconds, she was being treated like the person who had put him in danger.

The upscale backyard had been quiet that afternoon.

The pool shimmered beneath the afternoon sun.

A stroller stood beside the lounge furniture.

A glass door connected the patio to the enormous family room inside.

Everything looked peaceful.

Almost too peaceful.

Elena had been working as Noah's nanny for nearly eight months.

She knew his routines.

She knew when he was tired.

She knew which toy made him laugh.

And she knew that Claire, Noah's mother, preferred everything around the house to remain perfectly organized.

That afternoon, Elena had been folding a small blanket near the patio when she heard something.

A faint splash.

She turned.

For one second, she couldn't understand what she was seeing.

Noah was in the pool.

Elena reacted immediately.

She rushed forward, reached him, and brought him safely back to the edge.

Noah was conscious.

He began crying.

Elena held him tightly.

“I've got you.”

She was still trying to understand how he had gotten there when the glass doors suddenly opened.

Daniel came rushing outside.

He had just returned from a business meeting.

His eyes immediately went to Noah.

Then to Elena.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

Elena opened her mouth.

But Claire spoke first.

“She had him.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What?”

Claire pointed toward Elena.

“She was the one closest to him.”

Elena shook her head.

“No. I found him in the pool.”

Daniel took Noah from her.

The baby was crying, but otherwise appeared responsive.

Daniel held him tightly.

Elena's hands were shaking.

“You have to listen to me.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What happened?”

“I don't know how he got there. I heard the splash and ran over.”

Claire interrupted.

“She pushed him.”

Elena stared at her.

“What?”

“I saw you near him.”

“No, you didn't.”

Claire's voice became louder.

“You were holding him.”

“Because I pulled him out!”

The argument attracted the attention of two neighbors.

Someone had already called emergency services.

A few minutes later, officers arrived.

Elena tried to explain everything.

She told them where she had been standing.

She pointed toward the pool.

She described the sound she had heard.

But one detail bothered her.

Claire was unusually calm.

Too calm.

She wasn't asking whether Noah was okay.

She wasn't checking the pool.

She was watching Elena.

And when one of the officers asked Claire what she had seen, Claire gave a strangely precise answer.

“I saw Elena standing beside the pool.”

Elena looked at her.

“You weren't even outside.”

Claire didn't respond.

Daniel looked confused.

“Claire?”

She turned toward him.

“I came outside when I heard the shouting.”

Elena immediately realized something.

Claire had changed her story.

First she said she had seen Elena.

Now she said she had only come outside after hearing the shouting.

The officer noticed too.

“Mrs. Bennett, were you outside when the incident occurred?”

Claire paused.

“No.”

“Then how did you see the nanny near the pool?”

Claire didn't answer.

Daniel slowly looked at his wife.

“Claire?”

She finally said,

“I saw her through the glass.”

The officer turned toward the house.

“Was the glass door open?”

“No.”

“Could you clearly see the pool from inside?”

Claire hesitated.

“Yes.”

But Elena noticed something.

The curtains.

They were partially closed.

And the chair positioned beside the door blocked part of the view.

Something wasn't adding up.

Then another officer walked toward the patio.

“There's a camera here.”

Everyone turned.

A small security camera was mounted beneath the roof.

Daniel looked surprised.

“That camera works?”

Claire immediately answered.

“No.”

The officer looked at her.

“How do you know?”

Claire paused.

“It hasn't worked for months.”

Daniel frowned.

“I thought it was connected.”

“So did I,” Elena said.

The officer examined the camera.

Then looked at the wiring.

“The camera appears to be powered.”

Claire's expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

“Claire?”

She said nothing.

The officer checked the home's security system.

A small monitor inside the family room displayed several camera feeds.

One was labeled BACKYARD.

The screen was active.

Elena's heart began racing.

“If there's footage,” she said, “it will show what happened.”

Claire suddenly stepped forward.

“We don't need to watch it.”

The officer looked at her.

“Why not?”

Claire didn't answer.

Daniel stared at his wife.

“Claire, let them check.”

She looked at him.

For the first time, she appeared nervous.

The officer accessed the recording.

The backyard appeared on screen.

Elena was visible near the patio.

Daniel watched silently.

The recording continued.

Then everyone saw something unexpected.

Noah's stroller was near the lounge furniture.

But no one was standing beside it.

Elena was several feet away.

Claire was nowhere in sight.

Then the video showed a shadow moving across the patio.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Stop.”

The officer paused the footage.

The shadow came from the direction of the house.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Who was that?”

“I don't know.”

The officer continued.

A few seconds later, Claire appeared on the recording.

She walked outside.

She looked around.

Then she moved toward Noah's stroller.

Daniel's expression changed.

“Why didn't you tell me you were outside?”

Claire remained silent.

Elena stared at the screen.

The recording continued.

Claire looked toward the house.

Then toward the pool.

She appeared to be searching for something.

Suddenly, she noticed the camera.
