Part 3

“I'm protecting my daughter.”

“You're destroying this family.”

“No, Sophia.”

He looked toward the staircase.

“This family started falling apart when my daughter became afraid to speak.”

Sophia didn't answer.

Then Adrian noticed something on the dining table.

A notebook.

It was open.

He recognized the handwriting immediately.

Sophia's.

He walked toward it.

She moved quickly to close it.

But Adrian had already seen the page.

There were dates written down.

And beside each date were short notes.

“Cried at breakfast.”

“Refused to give Noah the blue cup.”

“Asked for Daddy again.”

“Cried when Noah touched her doll.”

“Needs to learn consequences.”

Adrian stared.

“What is this?”

Sophia said nothing.

He turned the page.

More notes.

“Don't comfort immediately.”

“Make her apologize first.”

“Tell her Daddy is disappointed.”

“Remind her that she can be sent away.”

Adrian's face changed.

He looked at Sophia.

“You threatened to send her away?”

“She needed discipline.”

“She is four.”

“She manipulates you.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No. She was trying to survive you.”

Sophia's eyes filled with anger.

“You don't know what it's like to raise someone else's child.”

“No.”

Adrian's voice became quiet.

“But I know what it's like to be her father.”

He picked up the notebook.

“I want to know something else.”

Sophia said nothing.

“Where did you get the idea that Rachel abandoned Lily?”

Sophia froze.

Adrian watched her carefully.

“Who told you that?”

“No one.”

“Then why did Noah say it?”

She looked away.

“Children hear things.”

“From whom?”

Silence.

Adrian took out his phone.

He called someone.

Sophia immediately asked:

“Who are you calling?”

“Rachel's sister.”

Sophia's face changed.

Adrian noticed.

The call connected.

“Hello?”

“Claire?”

“Yes?”

“This is Adrian.”

“Adrian? Is Lily okay?”

Adrian swallowed.

“I need to ask you something about Rachel.”

Claire became silent.

“What happened?”

“Did Rachel ever say she wanted to leave Lily?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“Never.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“She never abandoned her?”

“Adrian, what are you talking about?”

He looked at Sophia.

“She was afraid that someone might take Lily away from her.”

Claire's voice softened.

“Rachel told me that before she died.”

Adrian's heart pounded.

“What did she mean?”

Claire hesitated.

“She said she was afraid someone in the family would try to convince you that Lily wasn't safe with her.”

Adrian looked at Sophia.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Claire, please.”

“She wouldn't tell me.”

Adrian stood perfectly still.

Then Claire said something that changed everything.

“Rachel also told me she kept a letter for Lily.”

“A letter?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In the old storage box at her mother's house.”

Adrian ended the call.

Sophia was staring at him.

“What letter?”

Adrian didn't answer.

The next morning, he drove to Claire's house with Lily.

He didn't tell Sophia where they were going.

Inside the old storage room, Claire opened a wooden box.

There were photographs.

Baby clothes.

Hospital bracelets.

And at the bottom was a sealed envelope.

On the front were four words.

“For Lily, when she is old enough.”

Adrian couldn't open it.

Not yet.

He gave it to Lily.

She held it against her chest.

Claire knelt beside her.

“Your mommy wrote that for you.”

Lily looked at Adrian.

“Can Daddy read it?”

Adrian nodded.

They opened the envelope together.

Rachel's handwriting filled the page.

“My sweet Lily,

If you're reading this one day, I hope you know something before you believe anything anyone tells you.

You were never unwanted.

You were never a burden.

And you were never the reason I left.

If someone ever tells you otherwise, please remember that sometimes people tell stories because the truth makes them uncomfortable.

Your father loves you more than anything.

Trust that.

And if you ever become afraid to speak, find someone who makes you feel safe enough to tell the truth.

You deserve that.

You always have.

Love,

Mommy.”

Lily didn't understand every word.

But she understood one sentence.

“Your father loves you more than anything.”

She looked up at Adrian.

“Daddy loves me?”

Adrian's eyes filled with tears.

He pulled her into his arms.

“More than anything in this world.”

For the first time in a very long time, Lily smiled.

Not a nervous smile.

A real one.

But the story wasn't over.

When Adrian returned home that afternoon, Sophia was gone.

So was Noah.

There was a note on the kitchen counter.

“We need space.”

Adrian didn't chase her.

Instead, he called his lawyer.

Then Lily's pediatrician.

Then a child therapist.

He wanted professionals to help him understand what had happened.

Over the next several weeks, Lily slowly began speaking again.

At first, it was only a few words.

Then sentences.

Then stories.

She told her father about the times Sophia had taken away her toys.

About being told that Daddy would be angry if she cried.

About being told that Noah's needs were more important because “he was the real child of the house.”

She explained why she stopped asking for things.

“Because Sophia says no.”

“Why didn't you tell Daddy?”

Lily looked at him.

“Because she said Daddy would be sad.”

Adrian felt tears burn his eyes.

“She told you that?”

Lily nodded.

“She said if I told you, Daddy would send me away.”

Adrian hugged her.

“I'm sorry.”

Lily touched his face.

“Are you mad?”

“I'm not mad at you.”

“Are you leaving?”

“No.”

“Promise?”

Adrian held her tighter.

“Promise.”

Months passed.
