Part 2
"Adam."
He remained silent.
"What happened on that date?"
Adam looked down.
"Rachel, I can explain."
She took a step backward.
"Then explain."
Vanessa suddenly entered the room.
"Don't."
Rachel turned toward her.
"Don't what?"
Vanessa looked at Adam.
Then at Rachel.
"The date on that photograph..."
She hesitated.
"...was the day Adam first met me."
The room went silent.
Rachel stared at her husband.
Adam closed his eyes.
"Rachel..."
She slowly looked at Vanessa.
"You knew him before me?"
Vanessa nodded.
"But that's not the worst part."
Rachel's hand moved instinctively toward her stomach.
"What is?"
Vanessa looked toward the security monitor.
The mysterious figure had disappeared from the guesthouse.
A new message appeared on the screen.
THE FILE IS IN THE HOUSE.
Then another line appeared.
HE HAS NEVER TOLD YOU THE TRUTH.
Rachel looked at Adam.
"What file?"
Adam didn't answer.
She walked toward the study.
Adam followed.
"Rachel, wait."
She opened the door.
Inside, everything looked normal.
Books.
Family photographs.
A large wooden desk.
Then Rachel noticed one drawer was slightly open.
She pulled it.
Inside was a locked metal box.
There was no key.
Adam stopped behind her.
"Don't open that."
Rachel turned slowly.
"Why?"
He had no answer.
She looked at the box again.
Then at him.
"What's inside?"
Adam's silence was enough.
Rachel picked up the box.
A small label had been placed underneath it.
She read the words.
PROPERTY OF WILLIAM CARTER
Rachel frowned.
"Who is William Carter?"
Adam's face changed completely.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
She whispered,
"Your father."
Rachel froze.
"My father?"
Vanessa nodded.
"He didn't die in the accident you were told about."
Rachel stared at her.
"What are you saying?"
Adam finally spoke.
"Your father discovered financial records connected to this estate."
Rachel's eyes widened.
"Then why did everyone tell me he died?"
Adam looked away.
"Because someone wanted you to believe that."
The room became silent.
Rachel looked at the locked box.
Then at Adam.
Then at Vanessa.
For the first time, she realized the pool had never been the real target.
It had only been a distraction.
Someone wanted Adam and Vanessa focused on the patio.
Someone wanted Rachel frightened enough to leave the house.
And while everyone was watching the pool...
Someone had entered the estate.
Rachel looked toward the window.
The curtains moved slightly.
She whispered,
"Someone is still here."
Adam turned.
The lights suddenly went out.
The house fell into darkness.
A phone began ringing somewhere upstairs.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then it stopped.
A moment later, Rachel's own phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
One new message.
No number.
No name.
Only a photograph.
Rachel opened it.
Her eyes widened.
The photograph showed her father standing beside the estate twenty years earlier.
Beside him stood a much younger Adam.
Rachel looked at her husband.
Adam stared at the photograph.
And then Rachel noticed something neither of them had seen before.
In the background of the photograph was the same old guesthouse.
Its door was open.
And someone was standing inside.
Someone wearing the exact same jacket as the mysterious figure from the security camera.
Rachel slowly lowered the phone.
"Adam..."
He looked at her.
"Who is that?"
Adam didn't answer.
Because he finally recognized the person too.
And suddenly, the mystery was no longer about what happened twenty years ago.
It was about who had returned to finish what had started that night.
