Part 2

“What do you mean?”

“I put camera there.”

“Why?”

“So Bunny could watch.”

Adam didn't understand yet.

But he didn't press.

Instead he asked,

“Did Rebecca hurt you?”

Grace thought about it.

“No.”

“Did the iron touch you?”

“No.”

That mattered.

Adam felt some of the pressure leave his chest.

“Did she touch the pillow with it?”

Grace immediately nodded.

“When?”

“Before.”

“Before I came in?”

Another nod.

“What happened?”

Grace pointed toward the pillow.

“She said stay still.”

Adam's stomach tightened.

“What happened after she said that?”

Grace lifted both hands over her face.

“Hot.”

“Did she put the iron on you?”

“No.”

“On the pillow?”

Grace nodded.

“Here?”

He pointed at the mark.

“Yes.”

“Were you lying there?”

Grace nodded.

Adam stopped asking questions.

Not because he believed the conversation was finished.

Because he realized he was moving toward questions a trained professional should handle carefully.

He didn't want to accidentally shape his daughter's answers.

He picked Grace up.

“Come on.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere else.”

He carried her downstairs.

Rebecca was in the kitchen.

She immediately approached.

Adam raised one hand.

“Stay there.”

Rebecca stopped.

“You're being ridiculous.”

Adam didn't answer.

He took Grace outside to the front porch.

His neighbor, sixty-one-year-old Linda Porter, was watering flowers next door.

“Linda.”

She looked over.

Then saw Grace crying.

“What happened?”

“Can Grace stay with you for a few minutes?”

“Of course.”

Adam crouched.

“You want to go with Miss Linda?”

Grace nodded.

Linda came over.

Grace knew her well.

Adam handed his daughter to her.

“Don't let anyone take her unless it's me.”

Linda looked toward the house.

Then at Adam.

“You need me to call somebody?”

“I am.”

Adam went back inside.

Rebecca was waiting.

“This is insane.”

Adam took out his phone.

“I'm calling the police.”

Her face changed.

“Police?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“I don't know yet.”

“Exactly.”

Adam looked at her.

“That isn't the defense you think it is.”

Rebecca laughed nervously.

“I scared her. Fine. It was stupid.”

Adam stopped.

That was the first time her story changed.

“You scared her?”

“I held the iron too close.”

“Why?”

“To make her stop pretending to sleep.”

Adam stared at her.

“Why would a four-year-old pretending to sleep require an iron?”

Rebecca looked away.

“She wouldn't listen.”

“About what?”

“Nap time.”

“It's almost six.”

Rebecca said nothing.

Adam remembered something.

Grace had started asking unusual questions over the previous month.

Is Rebecca staying tonight?

Will you be home before dark?

Can I sleep with my door open?

Adam had interpreted them as adjustment problems.

Grace's mother, Melissa, had died two years earlier after a long illness.

Adam had waited more than a year before dating seriously.

Rebecca had seemed patient.

Gentle.

She brought Grace coloring books.

Learned how she liked her grilled cheese cut.

Sat through cartoons she hated.

Then, slowly, things changed.

Not dramatically.

Rebecca complained Grace was too clingy.

Too sensitive.

Too dependent on Adam.

“She needs to learn you can't come running every time she cries.”

Adam had disagreed.

But he had treated it as a parenting difference.

Now that sentence sounded different.

His phone was still in his hand.

Rebecca noticed.

“Adam, please.”

“Why was there a camera in her room?”

“What camera?”

“The pink one.”

Rebecca went still.

Only slightly.

But Adam saw it.

“You knew?”

“It's a toy.”

“Did you know it recorded?”

Rebecca didn't answer.

Adam went upstairs.

“Adam.”

She followed.

He turned.

“Stay downstairs.”

She stopped.

Adam returned to Grace's room.

The little pink camera remained on the table.

He didn't immediately start deleting, editing or searching through it.

He photographed where it sat.

Then left it alone until officers arrived.

Two officers came first.

A child-protection investigator followed later.

Adam explained only what he personally observed.

Grace screaming.

Rebecca holding the steaming iron.

The scorch mark.

Rebecca's changing explanations.

The camera.

He didn't embellish.

Didn't claim he'd witnessed an assault he hadn't seen.

Rebecca gave her statement separately.

She said Grace had been refusing to nap.

She had been ironing downstairs.

She carried the iron upstairs.

She admitted lowering it near the pillow.

But said she only intended to frighten Grace enough to make her listen.

The scorch mark, she insisted, happened earlier.

Investigators documented the room.

The iron.

The pillow.

The camera.

Grace was examined.

There was no burn injury.

That fact brought Adam enormous relief.

But absence of a burn did not answer why a heated appliance had been used to frighten her.

The camera did.

Grace had accidentally recorded far more than anyone expected.

The device had been positioned against a stack of books.

Its frame showed only part of the bed.

That explained why the opening video hadn't clearly shown how the scorch mark appeared.

But there were other clips.

Grace had been recording “Bunny's movie” for days.

Most footage was useless.

A ceiling.

Stuffed animals.

Grace singing.

Thirty seconds of a lamp.

Then investigators found a clip from three days earlier.

Rebecca entered the room.

Grace was sitting on the floor playing.

“You didn't clean this.”

Grace continued arranging blocks.

Rebecca picked up one block.

“I told you twice.”

Grace whispered,

“Daddy said I can clean after dinner.”

Rebecca crouched.

“Daddy isn't here.”

Grace went silent.

Rebecca leaned closer.

“And you don't need to tell him every little thing that happens when he isn't here.”

The clip ended.

Another recording showed Rebecca standing in the doorway while Grace sat on the bed.
