Part 3
Daniel read it aloud.
“I have thought about what you asked me to do. I cannot agree to it. What happens next must be decided by the people directly involved. Please do not contact me again.”
Emily stared at him.
“What did your mother ask her to do?”
“I don't know.”
They found another letter.
Then another.
Each one revealed pieces of a story that had been deliberately hidden.
Margaret had known Eleanor years before Emily ever met Daniel.
They had been connected through an old family dispute.
There had been a child.
There had been a marriage.
There had been a separation.
And there had been a secret involving biological family history that Margaret believed could change everything.
But the documents never gave Emily a complete answer.
Instead, they created an even bigger question.
Why had Margaret wanted Emily to carry a particular embryo?
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Maybe Mom believed it would keep some family connection alive.”
Emily shook her head.
“That doesn't explain what she did.”
“No.”
“It doesn't explain why she interfered with our treatment.”
“No.”
“And it doesn't explain why she was so determined to control which embryo was used.”
Daniel looked down.
Then he remembered something.
“There was a box in Mom's attic.”
Emily looked at him.
“What box?”
“When I was a kid, she told me never to touch it.”
They went upstairs.
The attic was filled with old furniture and boxes covered in dust.
After nearly an hour, Daniel found a small wooden container hidden behind a stack of photographs.
The box had no lock.
Inside was a collection of letters, newspaper clippings and photographs.
One photograph showed Margaret as a young woman.
Beside her stood Eleanor Blake.
Between them was a teenage boy.
Emily studied the photograph.
She recognized him.
She had seen his face before.
She just couldn't remember where.
Then she realized.
The photograph had been included in one of Margaret's old family albums.
The boy was Daniel's older half brother.
Daniel stared at the picture.
“My mother told me he never existed.”
Emily turned toward him.
“What?”
“She said I was her only child.”
They looked at each other.
Suddenly, the mysterious embryo made more sense.
Margaret had spent decades hiding the existence of another branch of the family.
And the embryo was connected to that secret.
But Emily still didn't understand why Margaret had wanted her to carry it.
Then she found a handwritten note.
The handwriting belonged to Margaret.
There was only one sentence.
“If Emily carries this child, the family secret dies with her.”
Emily read it again.
Her stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.”
But Emily no longer believed that.
She believed someone knew.
And she knew exactly who.
Eleanor Blake.
They found her after three days of searching.
She was living in a quiet town several hours away.
Emily called first.
A woman answered.
“Hello?”
“Is this Eleanor Blake?”
There was a long pause.
“Yes.”
“My name is Emily Carter.”
Another silence.
Then Eleanor whispered:
“Margaret finally told you.”
Emily's blood ran cold.
“No. She didn't.”
Eleanor exhaled slowly.
“Then you found the records.”
“Yes.”
“I was wondering how long it would take.”
Emily sat down.
“Why did Margaret want me to carry that embryo?”
Eleanor was silent for several seconds.
Then she said:
“Because she believed that child would expose everything.”
“What everything?”
“The truth about your husband's family.”
Eleanor agreed to meet them.
When Emily and Daniel arrived, Eleanor was waiting on the porch.
She was an elderly woman with silver hair and tired eyes.
She looked at Daniel for a long time.
“You look like your father.”
Daniel froze.
“My father?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Your mother never told you the whole story.”
Inside the house, Eleanor explained everything.
Years earlier, Margaret had been involved in a complicated family conflict.
Daniel's father had secretly fathered another child before his marriage to Margaret.
That child was connected to Eleanor's family.
For years, Margaret had lived with the fear that the truth would become public.
But the secret was more complicated than simple betrayal.
The boy in the photograph had grown up believing his biological family wanted nothing to do with him.
Margaret had convinced herself that controlling the family's future would somehow repair the past.
She became obsessed with the idea that a child carrying certain genetic connections could reunite the fractured family.
When Emily began IVF, Margaret saw an opportunity.
She believed she could influence the treatment and convince Emily to accept a particular donor arrangement without knowing the complete history behind it.
But when the clinic refused to make the changes Margaret wanted, she became desperate.
“She thought she could control everything,” Eleanor said.
Emily's voice trembled.
“And she thought my pregnancy was something she could control.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked devastated.
“Why didn't you stop her?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“I tried.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Margaret threatened to destroy your father's reputation and make sure the entire family turned against one another.”
Daniel looked down.
“So everyone stayed silent.”
“Yes.”
Emily felt tears filling her eyes.
Not because she was confused anymore.
But because she finally understood how many people had allowed one person's obsession to grow unchecked.
She looked at Eleanor.
“Did you know what Margaret was doing to me?”
“I suspected she was interfering.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
