Part 1

Sophia Bennett was the CEO of a technology company preparing for a major fundraising deal. She had been married to Marcus for more than ten years and had always believed that her husband was the person who understood her best.
But Marcus was seeing someone else.
She was a beautiful, attractive young intern who worked under him.
His mother, Helen, had known about the affair from the beginning. She had even helped hide it, deliberately creating opportunities for Marcus to meet the young intern while doing everything she could to convince Sophia that she was simply too consumed by work and becoming unnecessarily suspicious.
As Sophia prepared to sign an important agreement involving their marital assets, Marcus and Helen repeatedly assured her that transferring some of the assets into a relative's name was only a temporary measure to protect the family from potential business risks.
Sophia trusted them.
Once everything was finalized, Marcus suddenly changed.
He became colder and more distant with her, gradually making his relationship with the young intern almost impossible to hide.
Still reeling from the shock, Sophia quickly discovered that most of the enormous wealth she had built and that had originally belonged entirely to her had already been rearranged.
She was devastated when she realized that her husband and mother in law had been preparing everything for months.
But the biggest shock came when Sophia opened an old email Marcus had accidentally left behind.
Buried among detailed plans for taking control of her assets, Helen had written to her son:
“Once she signs, you'll have everything. Then kick that old woman who can't even have children out of the house, and after that, you can be with whoever you want.”
Sophia trembled as she read the words again and again through her tears.
She went through the entire email thread, including the transfer documents.
Then she found a folder containing the entire plan.
But the person who had created the folder was neither Marcus nor Helen.
It was the young intern herself.
Sophia stared at the screen in disbelief.
Could it be that the woman Marcus was having an affair with had been the mastermind who had pulled both of them into the scheme?
Sophia did not move for several minutes.
The room around her seemed to disappear.
The soft hum of the air conditioner.
The distant traffic outside the windows.
The glowing city beyond the glass walls of her office.
Everything became strangely distant.
Her eyes remained fixed on the name at the top of the folder.
Claire Morgan.
The young intern.
The woman Marcus had sworn was nothing more than an ambitious employee who happened to spend too much time around him.
Sophia clicked the folder.
Inside were dozens of files.
Some were financial projections.
Some were copies of legal documents.
Others contained private information about Sophia's company, her personal investments, properties, bank accounts, and even details about the upcoming fundraising deal.
Sophia's hands slowly began to shake.
This was not an affair.
It was a plan.
And Marcus had not created it.
Helen had not created it.
Claire had.
Sophia opened the oldest document.
It was dated nearly nine months earlier.
That was before Sophia had ever suspected Marcus of being unfaithful.
The document was titled simply:
“Project Renewal.”
Sophia read the first page.
It contained a detailed analysis of her company.
Revenue.
Investors.
Shareholders.
Personal assets.
Real estate.
Private trusts.
Marriage agreements.
Everything.
Someone had studied her life as if she were a company that needed to be acquired.
Sophia scrolled further.
At the bottom of the document was a note.
“Phase One: Gain Marcus's trust.”
Her heart sank.
She opened another file.
“Phase Two: Create emotional dependence.”
Another.
“Phase Three: Encourage family pressure.”
Another.
“Phase Four: Restructure assets.”
And finally:
“Phase Five: Remove Sophia from the picture.”
Sophia leaned back in her chair.
She suddenly remembered every strange moment from the past year.
Claire appearing at company dinners.
Claire volunteering to help Marcus with projects that had nothing to do with her position.
Helen suddenly becoming unusually friendly toward Claire.
Marcus insisting that Sophia should trust him.
The strange phone calls.
The rushed legal documents.
The pressure to sign.
None of it had been random.
Someone had been moving pieces across a board.
And Sophia had been the piece they believed they could sacrifice.
She immediately copied the entire folder onto an encrypted drive.
Then she made another copy.
And another.
She did not send anything to herself.
She did not confront anyone.
Not yet.
She had learned one thing during her years as a CEO.
When you discover that someone is planning against you, the worst thing you can do is let them know you have discovered it.
So Sophia closed the laptop.
She wiped the evidence of what she had accessed from the computer.
Then she sat quietly in the dark until Marcus arrived home.
He walked into the house as though nothing had happened.
“You're still awake?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Yes.”
Marcus loosened his tie.
“I thought you'd be sleeping.”
“I couldn't.”
He looked at her carefully.
“Are you okay?”
Sophia almost laughed.
Instead, she smiled.
“I'm fine.”
Marcus walked over and kissed her forehead.
For years, that small gesture had made her feel safe.
Tonight, it made her feel nothing.
“Tomorrow is the investor meeting,” he said.
“I know.”
“Everything is ready.”
