Part 2

Because the test doesn't stop there. It never does. The examiner digs. And the lies start stacking up like bad sequels.

Lie number one: the condom. Maria found it in his backpack. He swore it was his cousin's. Then, under pressure, it became his brother's. Then, when asked again, it was his brother's book stack. The story shifts like a camera panning too fast. You can't track it. You're not supposed to.

Lie number two: hiding Maria on Facebook. He kept her off his profile. No relationship status. No photos. Just a blank space where a fiancée should be. That's not privacy. That's erasure.

Lie number three: excluding her from his friends. She wasn't invited to hang out. She wasn't part of the group. She was the secret. The one you keep in the dark.

Lie number four: sleeping with a family member. That one lands like a plot twist in a bad thriller. The audience gasps. Maria's face crumples. Gunner just sits there.

Four lies. One truth. And the truth is the kiss.

He admits it. On one of his walks, he kissed a girl. Just a kiss, he says. Not cheating. Maria fires back: "You still cheating regardless." And she's right. A kiss is a door. Once it's open, everything else can walk through.

But the excuses don't stop. They pile up like a bad edit. The hickey on his shoulder? Not a hickey. A bruise. From construction. The scratches on his back? He fell down a hill. You can almost hear the laugh track. Except nobody's laughing.

Maria's friend Lauren is in the wings. She's the one who exposed her own boyfriend as not the father on a previous show. She's honest. Brutally so. And she says Gunner is a cheater. She's seen it. Her boyfriend went to clubs with Gunner. Gunner bragged about bringing females home. That's not a walk. That's a hunt.

Gunner's defense? "I can't help who I like. Who I love. Who I get attached to." That's not a defense. That's a confession with a bow on it.

Maria asks the question that cuts deepest: "Why did you bring me on the show to make me look like a fool?" He doesn't answer. Not really. He says the test is wrong. The same test that cleared him on the big question. Now it's wrong. You can't have it both ways. But he tries.

The polygraph doesn't lie. People do. And Gunner lied four times. The fifth time, he told the truth. And it broke her.

The walk was never just a walk. It was a cover. A 3-to-8-hour cover. You don't walk that long unless you're walking away from something. Or toward someone.

Maria says she's not jealous by nature. But she knows her worth. She told him from the start: don't cross that line. He crossed it. Then he kissed someone on the other side.

The age gap? 21 years. It wasn't a problem in the beginning. Now it's a spotlight. He was a virgin when they met. Or so he said. Maria laughs at that now. "You ain't no virgin, honey." The audience laughs with her. But it's a sad laugh. The kind you do when you don't want to cry.

Gunner admits to sexual contact. But denies intercourse. That's the line he draws. As if that makes it better. As if a kiss and a touch are nothing. Maria knows better. She's been around. She's raised kids. She's loved and lost. She knows the difference between a mistake and a pattern.

The pattern is clear. The walks. The lies. The excuses. The kiss. The condom. The Facebook. The friends. The family member. It's all one thing: a double life. And Maria was the one kept in the dark.

She asks him why. He says the test is wrong. She asks him again. He says he loves her. But love isn't a get-out-of-jail-free card. Love is a verb. And his verbs are all past tense.

The polygraph results are in. He passed on the big one. But failed on the small ones. And sometimes the small ones are the ones that matter most. Because they're the ones you think you can get away with.

Maria's friend Lauren says it plain: "He's a liar." And she would know. She's been there. She's done that. She's got the T-shirt.

Gunner sits there. 19 years old. Engaged to a 40-year-old woman. And he can't stop lying. Not even on a polygraph. Not even when the truth would set him free.

The kiss was the crack. The lies were the flood. And Maria is standing in the wreckage. She wanted to know if he was cheating. She got her answer. And then some.

The walk that broke Maria wasn't the one he took. It was the one she took down the aisle of the Maury show. Toward the truth. Toward the pain. Toward the end.

And the cameras kept rolling.

The Walk, Replayed: What Maria Knew Before the Cameras Rolled

Cut back to the walk. The same walk we opened on. Only now we know what happened on it. Or at least, we know what Gunner says happened on it. One kiss. That’s the story. One kiss with some girl on a walk. He didn’t cheat, he says. He just kissed her. As if a kiss is a rounding error. As if a kiss isn’t the first domino.
